Camp Director Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Camp Director

REPORTING TO: Executive Director

ORGANIZATION PROFILE: Camp Kirk empowers neurodiverse kids and youth to reach their potential through recreational programs. Within a small and nurturing community, our programs emphasize strengths so participants can develop confidence, connection and community.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Camp Director will oversee and coordinate all aspects of Camp Kirk’s summer and year-round programs. Responsibilities include:

Leadership 

  • Work with the Executive Director to oversee the financial management of camp programs. This includes creating annual budgets and quarterly financial reports, and monitoring expenses and revenue within the framework of the operating budget.
  • Attend board meetings to report on Camp Kirk’s programs and services. Advocate for our camper families to inform the organization’s decision-making process and strategic plans.
  • Represent Camp Kirk at external activities and events to enhance the Camp’s profile. Work in partnership with the Executive Director and Development Director to promote the mission and values of Camp Kirk. This includes playing a supporting role in the planning and preparation of fundraising events, as well as participating in community/donor presentations.
  • Act as an organization representative on camp related matters to the Lions Club Camp Kirk Foundation (LCCKF) Board. 
    • Attend LCCKF Board meetings when invited and maintain a healthy working relationship with LCCKF Board members.
    • Update the LCCKF board on Camp Kirk’s program successes and developments, and advocate for the needs of our camper families and programs as it pertains to property management. 
    • Work with LCCKF’s property manager to ensure the property is in an appropriate and safe state to host camp programs. 

Program Operations

  • Develop, plan and oversee all aspects of Camp Kirk’s programs, including the following responsibilities:
    • Set goals and objectives to ensure programs support Camp Kirk’s mission, vision, and values
    • Evaluate programs to measure impact and operational effectiveness
    • Design programs that promote camper and staff wellbeing and empowerment, and prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    • Actively engage in risk management for all aspects of Camp Kirk programs. 
    • Manage inventories of equipment and supplies
    • Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of the summer camp and year-round programs
    • Manage the contract and relationship with 3rd-party providers who support camp operations (i.e. catering, ropes provider, etc.)
    • Monitor the changing context within which the camp’s programs and services are provided (i.e. the camp industry, the disability community, children’s mental health). Develop or revise Camp Kirk’s programs and services to meet its community’s needs. 
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute all aspects of the applications and registrations process for campers and staff
  • Work collaboratively with camper families to build relationships and ensure high level of support of campers
  • Establish and develop policies and procedures for Camp Kirk’s programs following applicable legislation, accreditation standards, and best practices. 
  • Ensure Camp Kirk’s programming and operations adhere to industry standards such as Ontario Camps Association, Ministry of Health and others.

Staff + Volunteer Management

  • Recruit, hire, supervise and support camp staff and volunteers 
  • Develop and oversee the training, supervision, and evaluation of camp staff and volunteers. Provide opportunities for professional development and personal growth for camp staff.
  • Establish a positive, healthy and safe work environment following all appropriate legislation and regulations.
  • Oversee payroll for camp staff. Ensure Camp Kirk’s bookkeeper has the appropriate documentation to process camp staff payroll.

Administration 

  • Plan and execute the marketing of Camp Kirk’s programs with the support of the Development Director
  • Collect photos, videos, testimonials and other materials to support Camp Kirk’s fundraising, communication, and marketing initiatives 
  • Ensure that camper, staff, and volunteer files are securely stored and privacy/confidentiality is maintained.
  • Oversee all administration tasks that are related to Camp  Kirk’s programs. This includes:
    • Overseeing accounts receivable for camper families
    • Coordinating the camp’s application and registration software (CampBrain)
    • Managing all communications with camper families, staff, and volunteers

REQUIREMENTS

Personal Characteristics

  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities
  • Personable, nurturing and energetic
  • Resourceful and strong critical-thinking skills

 Qualifications and Experience

  • Related degree or diploma (e.g. social work, therapeutic recreation, special needs education), or equivalent experience. 
  • 5+ years experience coordinating youth programming
  • 4+ years experience supervising staff 
  • Direct experience working with neurodiverse children or youth
  • Experience in an overnight camp setting  
  • G-level Ontario driver’s license, or equivalent
  • Standard First Aid

CONTRACT DETAILS

  • Full-time, permanent position
  • Annual Compensation: 
    • Salary range: $65,000-$80,000
    • $1500 medical allowance
    • $400 work-from-home allowance
  • Work Location
    • September-May: 
      • 80% remote work, 20% in-office (Toronto)
      • Live/work on-site at Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre for 6-8 weekends a year to coordinate ‘Camp Kirk Community Weekends’
    • June-August
      • Live and work on-site at the Kirkfield camp location
  • Vacation 
    • 3 weeks paid vacation per year
    • 10 days office closure around holiday periods
